A Holiday that Shouldn't Be Holy

It's ironic that we call even our secular government days of remembrance "holidays" when you consider the origin of the word "holiday" is the "Old English hāligdæg, 'holy day'" (OED), a day traditionally set aside for work-free, religious-themed worship or celebration. Now, I am all for religious freedom, but I don't think religion should have the freedom to enter into politics. Apparently, our forefathers felt the same way because, as we all know, while they were writing freedom of religious choice into the Constitution, they also wrote a little clause clearly defining the seperation of church and state. Afterall, we are a democracy, not a theocracy, right? So then why has our president, a man who swore an oath before the entire country, world, and whatever deity you worship, to uphold the spirit and letter of the Constitution of the United States of America, reportedly asked the Pope, leader of the Catholic Religion, to instruct his American bishops to urge church-goers to vote republican this election?

It is just another example of Dubya unapologetically trashing our Constitution when it serves his political goals, which he has made no secret of being "faith-based". As if ignoring it wasn't enough, he acknowledges its presence only when he finds a way of perverting its power to suit his prejudiced, sexist, bigoted, right-wing agenda. Our president is a power-hungry, religiously corrupted, morally bankrupt, ethically-challenged, brain-dead, spoiled little boy. He sits there in his office, with his Dick on hand to help call the shots, trying to device new ways of whittling away the civil rights of those groups he finds in some way un-apprehensible.

You want to know who I'm talking about? Because its not just gays. He has it out for women and immigrants (regardless of citizenship status), and the average American worker. Bush has admitted he not only wants to reduce gays and lesbians to permenant second-class citizenship via the Constitution, he would also support Constitutional ammendments that ban any form of abortion regardless of medical necessity, enforce religious instruction in public schools, and institute a state religion. Scared yet? He also made it possible for anyone who is not a national born citizen to be held in custody without just cause for an unlimited amount of time. Last but not least, he supports sending even more domestic jobs to foreign outsourcing centers with the proposed CAFTA. (Don't even get me started on his budget and foreign policies.)

Do you really want him in power for another four years? Look at the damage he's done so far and realize that he did that much knowing he needed to stay popular enough to be reelected--think about what he might do without needing to worry about reelection. Think about the damage he could do once he no longer feels accountable or obligated to the voters, we, the people of the United States of America. It's time to celebrate our independence and reclaim it by voting out this ultimate danger to our freedom and security; the greatest evil Bush ever accomplished was convincing Americans of his benevolence, that the devil doesn't exist in him.

Aha! A New Nine Inch Nails Video . . .

OK, I know I complained about the blog videos in the past, but I got curious and clicked over to check out the website that hosts them . . . you know, to see what was there. Well, I came across the new Nine Inch Nails video for the song "Only." After watching it, I decided I had to share it with everyone because it reminded me of a music video from the '80s by Aha (sp.?). You know the one I'm talking about--unless you're too young to have seen it, let alone remember it.--it was "Take on Me." Obviously the music and sentiment share nothing in common, but the style and medium of the video have an interesting parallel. Both depict being trapped in an alternate plain of existence visible to and of physical reality, but seperated and sharply divided from it--the inner fantasy world juxtaposed and competing with reality. Anyway, enjoy! (Video No Longer Available) Cheers-Thanksalot!

UPDATE TO PREVIOUS POST

Tim's flight went smoothly and he is now in Arkansas. My day feels hollow without being able to IM him. Still no word on exactly when he'll be back--either Friday night or Saturday morning/afternoon. Oh, and add that supreme bitch, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) to the list of modern-era senators refusing to cosponser the anti-lynching measure. I have also added her to my litany of reasons for truly despising this fucktard state in which I live. MEMO TO THE GOP: Your true (lack of) colors are showing. Smarmy sanctimonious bastards.
