Weekly News Brief

It's sweltering outside and the world sux. Details to follow . . .

Bush gave a speech last night in a feeble attempt to rally public support for his failing presidential policies and desert-Vietnam. He postitulatered mostly on 9/11, evoking its memory at least 5 times throughout his speech, but he forgot to mention how the hunt for Osama bin Forgotten was going. I'm sure he's right on top of that. Or maybe he's a bottom? Certainly would explain Karl Rove's position. Oh, and would sombody please tell Furious George that Iraq had no connection to 9/11? But I digress.

Bush also mentioned something about sending more troops if his commanders on the ground say they need them. Whew, getting drafty in here, or is it just me? The military applause ordered by Bush's advance team was an especially nice touch. Can't rely on the military to applaud him voluntarily, now can we. No, mustn't leave the preznit hanging on his punchlines, that would be rude. Anyway, that was pretty much the gist of Bush's speech: 9/11, 9/11, 9/11, 9/11, stay the course, please volunteer for the military so I can get more applause, if we need more troops we'll get more troops (insert Wicked Witch of the West cackle here). Glad nothing's changed in the past three years.

In other news . . . sources say that, while Iraq had no ties to Al Qaeda during 9/11, removing Hussein's regime has allowed the terrorist organization to make Iraq its brand new, number one state-of-the-art training facility replete with an endless supply of American and Iraqi civilian practice targets. Good thing we got rid of that monster Hussein. He might've shaken his widdle fist at us and called us names while thumbing his nose at the UN.

Locally, Perry's still Governor MoFo and we are having our first heatwave, with temps this week reaching into the triple digits. And its not even July yet! Can't wait till August. I tell ya, there's nothing quite like getting heatstroke while walking to your car in the morning.

On a lighter note, Canada's House of Commons passed legislation that is the first step in officially laying out the guidelines and laws allowing same-sex marriage for the entire country. The Canadian Senate is expected to pass the bill sometime in late July. It's aboot time.

Canada also saw its first same-sex military couple marry last month. The names of the soldiers were witheld. So the question is, now that they're married, who salutes whom? Or is it both?

Tim and I went to see Land of the Dead yesterday afternoon and I must say it is quite a thrilling movie. Even though the zombies aren't as flashy and glamourous as the Dawn of the Dead remake's or 28 Days Later's, the movie still scared the hell out of me at times. It is very much the classic zombie horror flick with a modern twist, very much as Shaun of the Dead was. Definitely a must see if you're a horror fan and also a definite must own on DVD.

Next week I'll review another, lesser known zombie flick that opens this weekend, entitled simply Undead. Set in a small town, a plague breaks out among the inhabitants and starts turning people to zombies. Hell breaks loose, etc. Looks low-mid budget and not much hype going into it even though it opens concurrently with big budget Spielberg flick, War of the Worlds. We'll see.

And on a final note, I learned today that our anniversary (June 28) is also the aniversary of the Stonewall Uprising that occurred in 1969 when queers and queens alike took to the streets and told the then-oppressive NYPD, "We're not gonna take your shit anymore." And they didn't. It is held to be the start of the modern gay rights movement. You'd think after seven years of sharing the same anniversary with such a significant event that I would have realized that before now.

Cheers-thanksalot . . .

Then don't read next week's coverage of Undead.

Don't worry, I'm only talking about the zombie flicks and as far as I know, Undead is the only other one out this year.

Don't forget the smash hit 'Butch and Poco - Undead', due out around Halloweentime.

UPDATE TO PREVIOUS POST

Tim's flight went smoothly and he is now in Arkansas. My day feels hollow without being able to IM him. Still no word on exactly when he'll be back--either Friday night or Saturday morning/afternoon. Oh, and add that supreme bitch, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) to the list of modern-era senators refusing to cosponser the anti-lynching measure. I have also added her to my litany of reasons for truly despising this fucktard state in which I live. MEMO TO THE GOP: Your true (lack of) colors are showing. Smarmy sanctimonious bastards.

Lynching Senators UPDATE

Hutchison has finally done the honorable thing and signed on as a cosponser to the anti-lynching bill. Let's see what Cornyn does. I take back what I said about Senator Hutchison, she is not a supreme bitch . . . . . . just a regular one.
